Chapter 4- journey to eastern hill

The end

I am Robin Parker, and it has been a year since we arrived here. We have been promoted to supervisor soldiers, a role that means commanding twenty men. Only two were chosen for this post, and so Sora and I stand together. One night, as we slept in our home, we were lost in dreams when the king himself appeared before us. His voice carried urgency—someone had kidnapped the princess. Rage surged through me, and without hesitation, I vowed to find her. Sora and I mounted our horses, the king insisting the kidnapper had fled east.

We rode hard, faster and faster, the cold wind cutting against my face beneath the metal helmet—not the grand helm of a knight, but the plain steel of a soldier. At 3 a.m., we reached a village. We questioned the people, but no one knew anything. Frustrated, we stayed the night and wrote a letter to the king, reporting all we had learned—or rather, all we had not.

At dawn, I mounted my horse again, and together we pressed eastward toward the hills. The mountains rose before us, beautiful and eternal, said to be home to beings beyond mortal life. We rode not knowing if she was alive, not knowing if we would ever find her, but my heart beat with a fire that drove me forward. She had once meant nothing to me, yet now she was everything. I would burn the world itself if it meant saving her.

Beneath my mask, my eyes betrayed what I felt. Anyone who looked into them would know. I understood the consequences—if I ever became entangled with her, it could destroy me. But I did not care.

Sora rode ahead, his gaze fixed forward, unwavering. When I looked at him, I saw the brother I never had, the one who was never born. If he had lived, he would have been like Sora—loyal, steadfast, unyielding. I knew he would never leave me. I turned my eyes forward again, the path rising steeply as the climb began.

We pressed eastward, hearts pounding, driven by nothing but faith and the rhythm of our breath. We did not know where she was, or if she still lived. We only knew we had to keep going. And so we rode, chasing destiny into the hills, waiting to see where it would lead us.
