CHAPTER 1

END?

SEPERATION

We reached the kingdom in a silence that felt like a finality. The Princess retreated to the gilded isolation of her palace, and I returned to the dust of my home. Sora and Ramy were there to meet me. When I told them of the bond I had forged, Sora beamed, clapping my shoulder. "Awesome, man," he whispered.

But Ramy’s face remained a mask of concern. "It is not right, Robin," he said, his voice low and heavy. "The two of you... it is like trying to bridge Heaven and Hell." Sora frowned, stepping between us. "Brother, let our friend have his moment of peace."

Two years passed like a slow-burning candle. Jasmine remained unmarried, a silent defiance against the court, and as long as she was by my side, the world felt steady. Ross had ascended to the throne; his father’s passing had forced him into a crown he now wore with gravity. We were no longer children playing at war; we were men. I heard rumors that the Angel I once chose had become a formidable King in the Heavens. I found a strange comfort in that.

My days were a cycle of discipline and quiet longing: two hours of training, hours spent at the stall, and stolen moments with Jasmine. The kingdom was peaceful—Queen Bellatrix had remained uncharacteristically still. But beneath the comfort, a thorn remained lodged in my heart: revenge.

I remembered the rich man who had dismantled my family for sport. I donned my mask, buckled my armor, and mounted my horse. As I prepared to leave, Ramy caught my reins. "Where are you going?" I replied without looking back, "To settle a debt."

I found the man living in a house built on the ruins of others. He looked happy. When I approached, sword drawn, he looked up with a flicker of recognition. "I think I know you," he stammered. Before he could say more, his eldest son rushed me, shoving my chest. "Get the fuck out of my house!" he spat. I didn't hesitate. My blade sang through the air, and his head rolled across the dirt. The father stared, paralyzed. "Don't worry," I said, my voice hollow behind the mask. "It was a sacrifice to God."

I turned to his younger son—a boy my own age. "Listen to me," I told him, looking into his terrified eyes. "Kill me today, or kill me tomorrow. But you are the only one who gets to try." Then, I methodically tore his world apart. I took his mother, his sister, and his niece. Finally, I dragged the father to the center of the village and ended him where all could see. "A sacrifice has been made today," I declared to the wind. It was a sin. I felt the weight of it settling in my marrow, but I didn't care. The debt was paid in blood.

I returned home to find the same boring walls, the same quiet streets. I roamed the town, seeking a distraction from the ghost of the man I had just killed. I bought bread from an old man and returned home to wait for the sunset. When Sora and Ramy returned, the air felt heavy. "So, my boy," Sora said, trying to break the tension. "Another boring day?"

"A peaceful day," I corrected. "Or a boring one. I can no longer tell the difference." Sora laughed, though his eyes were soft. "As long as I'm alive, I won't let you stay bored."

"So," I said with a sarcastic, jagged edge, "Are you going to perform a naked dance for me?" Ramy and I laughed, but Sora just smiled sadly. "Why did you say that?" I asked, my humor fading. "Robin, we are soldiers," Sora replied. "Our duty is to stand at the front and offer our lives as proof of our loyalty. There is no guarantee of a tomorrow for us."

I looked at Ramy. "When we die... will you send our messages to those we leave behind?" He stepped forward, placing a hand on my head. "That situation will never come."

The next day, King Ross ordered me to accompany him. We walked the castle grounds in the morning mist. "Robin," he said, "I can't believe you grew up here, right under my nose."

"My Lord, it was because of your grace that I had the chance to grow at all." Ross stopped and looked at me, his expression more fatherly than kingly. "I have never thought of you as just a soldier. You are like my own son. I cannot make you a Prince, and I cannot make you a King... but I haven't sent you to war because I cannot bear the thought of losing you."

Tears pricked my eyes. "Lord, my death is already written in the stars. But I promise you—if God sends me to Earth again, I will be born of your bloodline." The King hugged me then, breaking every protocol of the crown. "My boy, if the law demands I lose my son, then I disagree with the law."

I went home feeling the crushing weight of my secret. I was betraying his trust by loving his sister. I called Jasmine to our lake. She looked so happy to see me, which made the words taste like poison. "Jasmine... we cannot meet anymore." The light left her face. "Robin? Are you okay?" My eyes overflowed. She reached out, but I stepped back. "I cannot betray the King. He believes in me."

"I am not like other girls!" she cried, her voice breaking. "You are choosing my brother over me?"

"I'm sorry," I whispered.

"You have betrayed me," she said, her voice trembling with a mix of fury and grief. "I believed that the lips I felt would never lie. I never thought the heart I stole—the heart that wouldn't hurt a fly—would be the thing to destroy me. You were just a chapter, Robin. A short chapter that changed my entire life."

"I am sorry, Princess," I replied, my heart shattering. "I cannot be the book that reflects your life. I have the loyalty to serve you, but I do not have the royalty to hold you."

She fled, her cries echoing through the trees. As she vanished, I sensed a presence. "No need to hide, Ross." The King stepped from the shadows, his face wet with tears. "Why did you let her go?"

"I realized something," I said, looking at the water. "You can give her everything. Even the love she deserves." Ross hugged me, sobbing. "Thank you for believing in me. I will never hurt her." I leaned my forehead against his. "I wish you were royal," he whispered. I let out a hollow laugh. "My brother... I hope I get the chance to be your blood in the next life."
